I had the hankering for reading another book after a month long hiatus. I explored the online catalog of the local library in search of a book. I finally found one book that peaked my interest, but it had to be ordered in from another library.
How could I wait that long? Then I remember that one or two years ago I had picked up a book at a book exchange that I had yet to read. I looked through the old wooden cabinet that has been in my family for generations and finally located the book.
Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand. The cover looked really promising with a cheery yellow patch of towel and bare feet on the sand. National Bestseller was stamped across the top of the book. Followed by "Three women. Three secrets. One long, hot summer."
Needless to say, the book was not quite what I expected. At one point, I almost set the book down and refused to read it. It is good book, but one of the main characters had stage two lung cancer. That fact alone almost stopped me from continuing with the story line.
The story is about two sisters and the best friend of one of those sisters. They spend the summer in a tiny cottage on the island of Nantucket with one of the sisters' two young children. The story line is complicated at times and a few more characters are added along the way- a male college student for a babysitter, husbands, boyfriends and parents.
It is a story about coming to terms with life, turning lemons into lemonade, and finding yourself along the way. You find yourself rooting for the characters and experience sadness to have the story end. You learn about sisterhood, friendship, and motherhood as the characters move through their daily lives.
Part of the book made me wonder about my mom. Did she have pain like was described by the character with stage two cancer? How much more worse would it have been for my mom with stage four lung and brain cancer? With the symptoms described, how did my mom not know she was sick? Before my mom lost her short-term memory, what was she thinking? Did she have any regrets? And of course the biggest question of all, if my mom would of seen a doctor years earlier, could she have been saved?
I know that I will never have the answers to these questions. But it did not make the reading of this book any easier. Families battle cancer everyday- some lives are saved and some lives are lost. There is no point in worrying about what we cannot control, we just have to live our lives and hope for the best.

Numbers
For some reason, I have this weird fascination with numbers.
Today is 9/10/11. This is both pretty cool and unique as the next time this will happen is in the year 2111.
Our wedding anniversary (9-5=4) and my son's birthday (2+5=7) are mathematical. If you finagle the numbers right (with an equation within an equation) in my birthday, I can get all of the numbers to be a four of the same number. I remember the date of my husband's birthday by subtracting 1 from my birthday number.
I thought for sure that my kids would be born in the 20s. My parents were born in the 20s, my siblings and I were born in the 20s and my hubby was born in the 20s. But my children had different things in mind, they were both born in the single digits, 2 years apart with 3 days difference in their birth dates, but both on the Monday of the same week in same month.
Good thing I like numbers, since they can be very important when it comes to science and scientific observations. Maybe that is why I am so nature oriented!
So far, I have only met one other person that has the same view as I about numbers. Numbers sure are fascinating!!!

Rainy Walking Days
This past weekend was a three day weekend. With it came both the good and the bad, but we will focus on the good for this posting.
Saturday we had a wonderful surprise RAIN!!!!!! It had been about one and a half months since it rained last. So we were really excited that it rained. We even saw a rainbow! Hubby walked through the rain in celebration.
Sunday . . . we will just skip that day.
Monday was our seventh wedding anniversary. Hubby got breakfast from a wonderful bakery. Yummy!
Then we took a family walk through the neighboring cemetery. Afterwords, we played outside for a while.
During nap time, Hubby and I watched a movie: Just Go With It. It was pretty cute. Definitely needed some comedy during the day.

Lessons From Butterflies
Butterflies are amazing invertebrates!
Most live only a few weeks, but some . . .
like the Monarch Butterflies can live up to 6 months.

Common Buckeye |
Butterflies live pretty care free lives.
They drink nectar and flutter from here to there.
They have two antenna with knobs on the end.
They have four wings which they use to fly.
They are fun to chase with a camera.
Children also delight in a good butterfly chase.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail |
They have six graceful legs.
They start their lives as caterpillars.
They can be different sizes and different colors.
They can be still or quite often jumpy.
They have an amazing tongue called a proboscis.
They taste with their feet.
They are unpredictable and typically beautiful.
Yes, butterflies are quite amazing!

Life on the Prairie
Well it has been two weeks since my last post.
A lot has happened, some good and some bad.
So what have we been up to?
* First day of school for Pumpkin *
* Had a two day garage sale at grandma's *
* Photographed a Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle *
* Made Princess's hair stand
straight up during bath time *
* Took nature photography to escape
the sadness of a tragedy *
* Pumpkin's new love . . . MARBLES *
And as always, life goes on.
Remember to hug those that are dear to you!
Remember to say "I love you!"
Remember to cherish all of the memories
that this life gives to us!
May God bless all those whom mourn.
